The painter Salvatore Avitabile born in Sorrento ( Naples ) in 1972. paints as autodidact from a long time since 1983 he has chosen the oils technique on canvas, drawing inspiration for his first works from the landscape that surrounds him. His experimental phase turned to the search of his artistic personality is long but inconstant owing to his long travels for work. And it starts from 1990 to reach the 1999 in which his work gets permanently a distinctive personality after having studied in depth almost all the artistic movements of twentieth century.

He experiments the surrealistic-metaphysics painting in 1993 in particular where his instinctive and imaginative arbitrary picture of things makes him an unconscious follower of  Rene’ Magritte . but the pictorial idyll of the young artist can not last: in 1997 the life’s events drive him to look for a stable and reassuring geometrical construction in his painting that can restore the order, leading consciously up to the analytic cubism of Picasso and  Braque, performing a volumetrically decomposition of his representations splitting them up in autonomous chromo-structural entities. His artistic path continues first with the figurative expressionism and then with the abstract one discovering in the figure of Jackson Pollock the master of the gesture painting, the experience of release from emotional strains through the dynamic artistic gesture of his dripping, until coming to a more serene picture almost comic-strip of the pop-art especially in 1999 being inspired by Roy Lichtenstein.

Avitabile; ex merchant navy officer, after a decade of travels around the world, he wholly devotes himself to painting, except for occasional appearance on screen and on tv. his present artistic pursuit follows two parallel ways that in his latest works go combining themselves on the canvas even though keeping intact their identity, the study of primary colours that remembers the work  of Mondrian with his chromatic contrasts and with optical effects that these produce in the bystander but included in a figurative context partly similar to that of  Valerio Adami and  where he doesn’t miss out the use of  a wide range of colours and of chromatic chords that are revived from work to work.

The modern art which marks this first way goes combining itself in the thought of Avitabile with the baroque painting, especially with Caravaggio’s work of whom he’s presently studying the exquisite technique (second way) and that is deduced  from the painting: ”il bacchino celiaco” openly inspired by the great master where not only the chromatic contrast but also the stylistic one are carried out in the attempt of realizing a suggesting and harmonic pictorial effect full of expression .
